How to get your dog to fetch underwater!

There are a couple of characteristics that your dog must have to make it easier to train. First, your dog must really have a passion to play fetch or to retrieve an object. Second, your dog must like the to swim or go in the water.Given that your dog has both of these, make sure that you have the object and that it will sink in the water and not float.( I will refer to the object to be fetched from here on out as a ball, since that is what I trained my dogs with) Place the ball on the first step of a pool and communicate with your dog to retrieve it. Usually the first step is about six to eight inches of water and the dogs head will not go deeper than their snout or eyes. If they retrieve and are showing that they are ok with it than place the ball on the second step and cheerfully communicate for the dog to retrieve. If this is done so that it is fun and the dog is willing and showing passion for the ball than proceed.Do not force your dog, if it wont get the ball from the second step than it most likely will not go any deeper. If your dog does fetch from the second step than try the third and so on and so fourth. Good luck and keep it fun!
